New Possibilities Offered by IPv6

چکیده
The new Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) [1] has many simplifications and new features compared to the older Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) [2]. The new header is very simple. A fixed format is assigned to all headers. Some new fields were added to the header. Flow ID indicates that the packet belongs to a certain flow. A flow is identified by the source address, destination address, and the flow ID. It is possible to set up a cached flowhandling state as the first packet of the flow is processed on network layer (layer 3). The following packets are forwarded based on the information in cache. This makes an enormous save of time in layer 3 processing delay. The transitioning to IPv6 requires dual stacks at routers, i.e. the ability to handle both IPv6 and IPv4. IPv6 islands can be connected to one another through IPv4 tunneling.

متن کاملTransient Addressing for Related Processes: Improved Firewalling by Using IPV6 and Multiple Addresses per Host
Traditionally, hosts have tended to assign relatively few network addresses to an interface for extended periods. Encouraged by the new abundance of addressing possibilities provided by IPv6, we propose a new method, called Transient Addressing for Related Processes (TARP), whereby hosts temporarily employ and subsequently discard IPv6 addresses in servicing a client host’s network requests. Th...

IPv6 protocol, which should replace the actual IPv4 protocol, brings many new possibilities and improvements considering simplicity, routing speed, quality of service and security. In comparison to IPv4, IPv6 improves mechanisms for assuring a secure and confidential transfer of information. Despite these improvements, network security remains a very important issue since there are some securit...
متن کاملToward Ipv4 to Ipv6 Migration within a Campus Network
The evolution of the Internet has effectively exhausted all unique addresses offered by the current IPv4 protocol. Hence, IPv6 has been developed in response to the predicted long-term demand for addresses by Internet users. This new IP version has a 128-bit address length, which is four times that of IPv4. As the two protocols have different formats and behaviors, efforts are needed to ensure ...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of the NAP Protocol for IPv6 Router Auto-configuration
This paper presents a model of the NAP protocol, dedicated to the auto-configuration of IPv6 routers. If hosts autoconfiguration is defined by IPv6, IPv6 routers still have to be manually configured. In order to succeed in new networking domains, a full auto-configuration feature must be offered. NAP offers a fully distributed solution that uses a link state OSPFv3-like approach to perform pref...
